During a
meeting of Commonwealth Heads of Government held in Cyprus in 1993, it
was suggested that the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation of
the Commonwealth Secretariat should explore means to use the services of
volunteers to meet the increasing demands for technical assistance by
developing member countries of the Commonwealth.
For this
purpose, it was decided to establish the Commonwealth Service Abroad
Programme [CSAP] which draws upon expertise throughout the Commonwealth
and covers a wide range of disciplines and professional specialisations.
The
duration of projects under the programme usually range from one week to
three months or more and volunteers are contracted on a no-fee basis but
receive a daily allowance at UN rates, return economy class airfares and
personal accident and medical insurance.
The General
Technical Assistance Services Division [GTASD] of the Commonwealth
Secretariat is seeking to increase the number of experts registered on
the Roster and interested individuals may contact the Staff Development
Organisation about the required application formalities.
They may
also contact directly the GTASD at the following address:
